The Mountain Biking Vacation - Crested Butte, Colorado

…and I’m back…

Last winter when the Spouse and I were making plans for our summer vacation we knew we would be brining the mountain bikes along.  But where to go?  There are so many great destinations for dirt riders, most of them in the west.  In the end we decided to head to where mountain biking was born: Crested Butte, Colorado.  Located about 30 miles north of Gunnison, Crested Butte is a skiing and mountain biking mecca with hundreds of miles of trails for just about every level of biker.

We reserved a vacation rental condo on Mount Crested Butte, which gave us direct access to the mountain bike trails that the resort maintains (literally, right out our front door).  You could pay $30 a day for a lift ticket to take you to the top of the mountain to ride the downhill trails (everything from beginner to nail-biting expert), or ride any trail for free if you were willing to do the climbing yourself.  We’re cheap cross-country riders, so of course we climbed.  The views and the trails were worth it…

Mount Crested Butte (to my left) is about 12,000 feet - we could climb to about 11,000 on the bikes

It was a great week of high altitude training, which also involved a few rides at Hartman Rocks outside of Gunnison, and a side trip through Boulder to check out the Valmont Bike Park.  Definitely worth the 1,100 mile drive – though I am still wiped from the whole adventure.  More to come…
